Less noise, more signal: Atlassian’s responsible AI journey continues
New lessons, new commitments, and how you can join us.
Atlassian’s mission to unleash the potential of every team is about more than just building great tools. It means building them responsibly and in alignment with our values and the needs of our customers, our people, and our community stakeholders. As AI transforms how teams work, we know that principles alone aren’t enough. Responsible AI needs to be a practical, lived reality for every team.
That’s why we’re excited to share our updated responsible AI resources:
- our No BS Guide to Responsible AI Governance, and
- our updated Responsible Technology Review Template
These resources are designed for real teams who want real tools to put responsible AI into action.
This update builds on the groundwork we’ve laid. We first published our Responsible Technology Principles in 2023, followed by our initial versions of these resources. Since then, we’ve been listening, learning, and iterating.
Here’s what’s new, what we’ve learned, and how your team can get started today.
What’s new: our refreshed Guide to Responsible AI Governance
Our updated guide is designed to help teams of any size navigate the fast-changing world of responsible AI and AI governance. We’ve streamlined our associated Responsible Technology Review Template, focusing on the questions that matter most and making it easier for teams to use no matter where they are on their AI journey.
This refresh is the result of months of gathering feedback from teams both inside and outside Atlassian. We listened to what worked, what needed improvement, and where teams needed more support. In response, we expanded our training and resources and sharpened our focus on the AI use cases that matter most to our customers and community.
The guide also covers our approach to responsible AI beyond our walls. From joining the EU AI Pact to collaborating with the Human Technology Institute and other leaders in the field, we want to help shape responsible AI for Atlassian and the broader ecosystem.
How we got here: the evolution of responsible AI at Atlassian
Looking forward, our vision for responsible AI at Atlassian is anchored in three core pillars that have consistently shaped our approach.
These pillars are informed by our partnerships with our fellow Atlassians, customers, policymakers, and community stakeholders. They serve as a foundation for how we build, deploy, and govern AI at Atlassian, helping us make thoughtful decisions and earn trust as we move forward.
Here’s how these pillars come to life:
- Upholding our principles through real-world practices. Our Responsible Technology Principles are rooted in Atlassian’s unique values, and brought to life through our responsible technology reviews – a practice we designed to be flexible, scalable, and usable by real teams.
- Learning together, as a team. We believe responsible AI is a shared effort. That’s why we focus on equipping teams with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate AI responsibly, making learning and improvement a continuous, collaborative process.
- Delivering transparency and driving dialogue. We’re committed to sharing not just what we do, but why and how we do it. Our participation in the EU AI Pact is one example of how we’re learning from evolving regulations and sharing those lessons with our community.
Along the way, we’ve learned that responsible AI is a journey, not a checkbox. The most effective AI governance builds on what’s already working, adapts to new challenges, and values transparency and collaboration.
As technology evolves, so will our approach. But one thing won’t change: our commitment to building AI that’s both powerful and principled.
