Last month, the Pune Community Group brought 80 developers together to build real-world applications using Forge and Rovo, and it was a huge success! Every participant created two functional apps in just five hours. Three community champions and five Atlassian experts provided hands-on guidance throughout the session.

What follows are highlights from the day’s most insightful discussions and discoveries.

Why should developers build with Forge and Rovo?

Participants learned about Atlassian’s new platforms at the meetup: Forge and Rovo. The event started with an overview of Forge, an app platform simplifying development by handling infrastructure, authentication, and scaling. Kewal dug into the what and why of the platform. A deep dive into Forge’s architecture and building blocks clarified how the platform makes developing and deploying safe apps easier. Next up was Rovo, Atlassian’s new AI development platform. In this session, Pawan introduced the audience to the Rovo platform, Atlassian’s new app for building AI-enabled automations, from search to AI agents. He discussed how Rovo chat, knowledge cards, and AI agents can answer questions, uncover insights, and take action without disrupting your workflow.

What did developers build during the session?

After learning about the platforms, it was time to put theory into practice. The lesson began with an introduction to Forge: creating a basic Forge app for Jira. To get up and running, the room installed and learned how to use the Forge CLI, Atlassian’s toolkit for building, testing, and deploying Forge apps. Within a few minutes, many developers had already built and deployed their first “Hello World” app.

Building upon the previous experience, the room moved on to a more advanced use case: creating a custom Jira issue analyzer agent with Rovo and Forge. By the end of the session, most developers had built an agent that could use Atlassian APIs to retrieve issues and analyze trends in real-time.

Which development approaches worked best?

Learning a new platform or technology is always challenging, but the community champions shared several great tips for getting started with Forge and Rovo:

  • Start simple. Begin with simple use cases, like a “Hello World” app and gradually layer on more complexity and features.
  • Use templates as starting points. When building a Forge app, use the ready-made templates to focus on features instead of boilerplate.
  • Go serverless whenever possible. Every external integration adds complexity. Use Forge’s out-of-the-box solutions for storage, compute, and more to accelerate and simplify development.

Ready to start your journey?

The Atlassian Community event in Pune was a unique gathering where developers came together to learn new platforms and skills as part of a supportive community. But you don’t have to be in the same room to learn something new. Thousands of developers are learning how to extend and customize Atlassian using Forge and Rovo. Now it’s your turn.
